The drug administration is a process that involves the patient safety, being the responsibility of the professional nursing. It is necessary that these professionals have the proper attention to avoid medication errors. This project aimed to describe the actions of professional nursing to ensure the safe administration of medicines. This study is a literature review, using the bibliographic research with descriptive and exploratory character and qualitative nature. Thus, the results evidenced that patient safety in drug administration is the responsibility of the nursing staff, which is supported by law for such activity and they should use strategies as the nine certain of nursing, confer the patient through the identification and bed, check their medicines after administrated, the use of electronic medical records and have the assistance of the pharmacist in scheduling prescriptions, answering questions to avoid the error. Finally, it is concluded that the health professionals must update themselves and seek for knowledge and the health institutions should promote a continuing education and encourage the professionals to seek knowledge, adopting a policy to prevent the error.
