Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries causes childhood problems such as chewing difficulties, changes in sleep, changes in behavior, and lower school performance, which can lead to a worse quality of life. AIM: To evaluate the impact of dental caries on children's oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and to verify the consequences of carious lesions in enamel and dentin. METHODOLOGY: This is a cross-sectional study, with children aged 8 and 10, attended at a children's dental clinic at a private college in Teresina-Piauí. Data collection was carried out by applying the CPQ8-10 (quality of life), sociodemographic questionnaires, and clinical examination. Descriptive analysis of the data was performed, and Pearson's chi-square test was applied. A value of p <0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: 75 children participated, 57.3% were male, 37.3% were 10 years old, 72.0% had the experience of caries, and 69.3% needed treatment. The dmft index (2.52 ± 2.77) was higher than the DMFT (1.18 ± 1.58), pufa (0.14 ± 0.45) and PUFA (0.05 ± 0.27). Children with caries experience had worse OHRQoL in the domains: oral symptoms (40.7%, n = 22, p = 0.029) and emotional well-being (44.4%, n = 24, p = 0.041). Children with need for treatment had worse OHRQoL in the functional limitation domain (40.4%, n = 21, p = 0.047). CONCLUSION: Children with caries experience and need for treatment had a worse OHRQoL. There was a high prevalence of caries experience and need for treatment among children. The most prevalent clinical consequence of untreated caries was pulp involvement.
