Abstract

Objectives: To investigate the prevalence of the Burnout syndrome in teachers from a private institution, to analyze the correlation between the Burnout syndrome and standard of living, and to present its main characteristics. Method: This is a cross-sectional observational study with a quantitative nature, sampling 93 informants from both genders, acting teachers of a higher education institution. For the descriptive analysis of the characteristics of the populations, the variables’ averages and standard deviations were calculated. The correlation between standards of living, predicting factors, signs and symptoms of the Burnout syndrome was achieved through Spearman’s correlation coefficient. The adopted level of significance was 1%. Results: Among the participants, 5.38% confirmed the presence of the syndrome and 15.91% showed exposure to it. It was also observed that 34.4% showed high levels of emotional exhaustion, 24.7% showed high levels of depersonalization, and 34.4% showed low levels of professional fulfilment. Conclusion: The professionals showed emotional exhaustion signs consistent with Burnout Syndrome at high levels, related tlinked to the sum of requirements of their professional practice. The findings of this study can promote mental disease prevention programs in the teaching jobs.
