Abstract

Objective: Analyzing the physical and functional condition and quality of life in patients in pre and post cardiac surgery. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional design, with patients submitted to elective cardiac surgery. Patients were evaluated in pre operatory and post operatory (right before being discharged) stages, regarding to the physical and functional conditions, including anthropometric measurements, the sitting test and standing in a minute (TSS1min), inspiratory (IMS) and expiratory (EMS) muscle strength, chest circumference and quality of life measured by WHOQOL-bref. Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS software (version 23.0) and qualitative variables were presented by frequencies and percentages, and quantitative were presented as mean and standard deviation (M±SD). We used the Student T Test to compare pre and post operative time, adopting the significance level of p? 0.05. Results: In the analysis of the pre and post operative there was a statistically significant reduction in physical and functional evaluation of all variables, including TSS1min (p = 0.001), IMS (p = 0.001) and EMS (p = 0.001 ) and chest cirtometry (p=0.001). However, quality of life scores showed a statistically significant improvement in the four domains (physical p=0.043; p=0.001 psychological, social relations and environmental p=0.046 p=0.001) and in the two general questions (p=0.001). Conclusions: There was a worsening of functional physical condition, but there was an improvement in quality of life between the pre and post operative stage in patients submitted to a cardiac surgery.
