Perceptions of adolescent mothers about breastfeeding

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To highlight the perceptions of adolescent mothers regarding breastfeeding. METHOD: Descriptive exploratory study with a qualitative approach carried out with 10 adolescent mothers accompanied at a health unit in Acre. Data collection took place through semi-structured interviews and analysis using the Bardin content analysis technique. RESULTS: Structured into three categories: Knowledge of the adolescent mother about breastfeeding; Conducting prenatal consultations and receiving guidance by health professionals on the importance of breastfeeding; and Difficulties encountered when breastfeeding. For most adolescents, breast milk is very important, as it provides the baby with the nutrients necessary for her healthy growth and development. Most did not remember the amount of prenatal consultations performed and stated that they had received little guidance from the health professional regarding the topic. The main difficulties encountered in the act of breastfeeding were, incorrect grip, nipple cracks, pain during breastfeeding and the baby's rejection of the breast. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: The adolescents demonstrated to have knowledge about breastfeeding, but insufficient follow-up by health professionals, making evident the need to implement actions capable of meeting the needs of this population to avoid early weaning.
