Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the quality of life of elderly people living in a long-term institution through a systematic review. Materials and methods: This is a systematic review. A total of 20 articles retrieved from the SciELO and LILACS databases between 2010 and 2015 were selected and read in detail. The following steps were applied in the elaboration of the systematic article: 1) elaboration of the guiding question; 2) definition of inclusion criteria and searches in the literature; 3) critical analysis of the studies; 4) representation of the included studies in tables; 5) discussion of results; and 6) to report the evidence found. Results: They were presented in the form of tables, divided into the following analytical categories: "main results found on the quality of life of elderly people living in long-term institutions" (46.1%), "main results found regarding factors associated with quality (38.4%) and "main results on preventive measures for the quality of life of elderly people living in long-term care institutions" (30.7%). Conclusion: The elderly undergoing the institutionalization factor are more willing to have their quality of life compromised, it is up to the institutions to focus on the humanization of the physical environment and qualification of the professionals of the team, adopting a posture that provides the resignification of the elderly, bringing a new look to the elderly resident so that their particularities are met.
