Abstract

The World Health Organization considers suicide a public health problem. Data shows the mean of a million deaths each year by suicide. Brazil is one of the ten countries that record the highest suicide numbers. Because of these numbers, growing over the years, in 2006, the Ministry of Health created the National Guidelines for Suicide Prevention. This subject has been little worked and visible and it is a challenge to Psychology, in all its areas of expertise but perhaps more challenging for a psychotherapist. This paper aims to review the literature on the role of a Jungian psychologist ahead to a patient with suicidal ideation. The methodology is a narrative literature review about what was published in the Virtual Health Library (BVS), the largest health data base, in the Scientific Electronic Library Online publications (SciELO) and the Electronic Journals Psychology (PePSIC). Descriptors were the following terms: Suicide, Suicidal Ideation and Analytical Psychology. The results yielded few publications regarding this subject, highlighting the lack of studies on suicide and its rare inclusion in Psychology graduatrion courses.
