The Use of Lippia in the Treatment of Periodontal Diseases

Plants of the genus Lippia, found in several Brazilian states, have several therapeutic properties already used in popular culture for several diseases, including disorders of the oral cavity. The present work aimed to describe the state of the art about therapeutic properties of plants of the genus Lippia, especially of the use in the prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases. For the literature review, the databases LILACS, BBO and Scielo were used, using dental descriptors, genus Lippia, and periodontal disease. Despite the scarcity of studies on the subject, found literature points out that some species of the genus Lippia have potential for control of periodontal diseases. However, it is evident the need for greater deepening, with bioprospecting studies, since these plants have vast potential for new products in the dental area, with low cost and easy to use. Associating with their pharmacological properties and cytotoxicity, for its systematized use as an adjuvant in the prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases.
