Abstract

Objective: To summarize the main scientific evidences regarding the effectiveness of physiotherapy in shoulder range of motion in patients undergoing surgery for breast cancer. Methodology: The search was conducted from a predetermined protocol in the PubMed/Medline and Bireme databases, using the keywords: mastectomy, surgery for breast cancer, joint range of motion, exercise, exercise therapy, exercise and movement technique and physiotherapy, as well as its correlates in english language, through combinations of boolean operators (AND and OR), without time or language boundaries. The methodological quality and risk of bias in the articles was assessed according to the Cochrane Collaboration. Results: 193 articles were found in the primary search. From the 8 selected articles, it was found that there are physiotherapy resources to improve the shoulder range of motion in women who underwent surgery for breast cancer. Conclusion: The evidence found in this systematic review suggests that physiotherapy is effective for shoulder range of motion recovery in the postoperative period of surgery for breast cancer.
