Abstract

The objectives of this study were to identify the incidence of pneumonia associated with mechanical ventilation in an Adult ICU, and to assess whether the actions for preventing such adverse events were held. Methodology: It is a systematic observational study, non-participant, in a prospective aspect associated to a documental research with a quantitative nature. Results and Discussion: The density of pneumonia incidence was from 84.74 / 1000 fans-day. From 20 participants of the research, 50.0% acquired pneumonia (n = 10), the mortality rate was 60.0% (n = 12) and from the patients who died, 66.6% (n = 8) had pneumonia associated with mechanical ventilation. In most cases (62.3%), the headboard was in an inadequate high, no patient was monitored for a cuff endotracheal tube with a correct pressure, and no patient underwent a subglottic suctioning. The oral hygiene care with Chlorhexidine, the use of gastric protectors, and the daily interruption of sedation were properly performed. Final Considerations: It was foundthe necessity ofimplementing effective protocols foran adequate elevation of the headboard, as well as the acquisition of a Cufflator, and of a subglottic suctioning system as indispensable equipment for preventing the pneumonia associated with mechanical ventilation, ensuring, this way, the best quality of care, so longed by the health institutions.
